Jarrett sign the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. US Ambassador Susan Rice accompanied by Senior White House Advisor Valerie B. Jarrett, today (30 July) added her signature to the United Nations Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities. The Convention, which entered into force on 3 May 2008, is the first comprehensive human rights treaty of the 21st century and is the first human rights convention to be open for signature by regional integration organizations. Ambassador Rice said that this treaty further advances the human rights of the 650 million people with disabilities worldwide. If ratified by the US Senate, it will be the fourth major human rights treaty ever adopted by the United States. During his campaign, then-US Senator Barack Obama promised that if elected he would sign the Treaty. Jarrett said that President Obama took a bold step forward for our country by announcing last week that the United States would sign this extraordinary Convention. The Convention is intended as a human rights instrument with an explicit social development dimension. It adopts a broad categorization of persons with disabilities and reaffirms that all persons with all types of disabilities must enjoy all human rights and fundamental freedoms. In a speech to the leadership of the UN Refugee Agency in Geneva, Angelina Jolie said that humanitarian work "needs to scale up to meet the needs of these individuals" and warned that the level of world response will determine "whether a huge number of people live or die." Jolie and the Yemeni humanitarian aid group Society for Humanitarian Solidarity (SHS) were praised for their outstanding work to help the world's refugees over the past ten years; Jolie and the SHS founder and 290 staff of SHS received the prestigious Nansen Refugee Award for their live-saving work helping tens of thousands of desperate boat people on the coast of Yemen from the Horn of Africa. The violence, wealth and sophistication of Jamaican lottery rackets -- and their ability to reach beyond borders to ensnare American citizens -- has long been a concern to the United States Government Department of Homeland Security (DHS). DHS joined forces with Jamaican authorities to create JOLT -- Jamaican Operations Linked to Telemarketing.Vance Callendar, Attaché to the US Embassy in Kingston, was instrumental in carrying out the JOLT programme. He was also the primary liaison with Jamaican authorities. In June 2009 JOLT agents in Jamaica launched a raid in the Montego Bay area. Hundreds of cell phones, computer equipment, and digital phone cards were confiscated. Lottery fraud ringleaders were arrested. To date, 85 people have been apprehended and six indicted. MaximsNewsNetwork: 26 April 2010 - UNAMID: Darfur, Sudan - Four South African peacekeepers kidnapped in South Sudan's Darfur region earlier this month were released on today (26 April), the Joint African Union-United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission (UNAMID) in Darfur reported. Two men and two women from the mission were kidnapped on 11 April from the region's main town Nyala. A UN statement said Joint head of UNAMID, Ibrahim Gambari, held a meeting on Sunday with Sudan's President Omer Al-Bashir, who had "pledged to do everything possible to assist in bringing about the safe return of the UNAMID personnel." Following a medical examination the peacekeepers will be flown to their home country, where they will be reunited with their families. ...........
